For how many miles should I expect my 2002 VW Passat’s disk pads to last?
Car was bought new … Have had to change the rear pads only (and rotors, thin and I’m told designed to be replaced with pads) at 20K, 40K, 55K. Dealer-serviced all the way (City VW – San Diego). New pads are 10mm thick, dealer changes when below 2mm (I measure pad thickness just before service). My driving is mostly “city”, so do more braking/mile than the freeway commuter. Fronts are still original at about 5mm (50% wear). Any experience out there with this make/model? Is it surprising that rear/front wear is so different, and that wear is primarily on rear?
I can’t comment specifically on your make/model, but it’s not unusual to need to replace them somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 miles if you do a lot of city driving. Highway driving will obviously wear them less. I’d expect your front pads to wear much more quickly than your rear pads. I see some suggestions that front normally wears 3 to 4 times faster than rear pads. That has not been my experience, but the front should wear more quickly than the rear. So it is definitely surprising that your rear pads have been wearing more quickly. I couldn’t find anything specific to your model which would account for this, though.
