Can you still use an older Warhammer 40k Codex in 5th edition if GW hasn’t released a new version yet?
I have the Eldar Codex from 2006, but with the new 5th edition of 40k recently released, can I still use it to build army lists? If so, are there any changes or things I need to know?
You certainly can still use the old codex. In fact, it is a principle of the Studio’s design process that a new edition should never render a current codex obsolete (although they may render them less effective).
There are few truly significant changes for Eldar. The fact that all infantry troops can now “Run” has drawn off some of the advantage of the “Fleet” special rule, it’s true. But the new cover rules for Fast vehicles moving Flat Out and for jetbikes turbo-boosting, not to mention the new vehicle damage tables, make the fragile Eldar vehicles and bikes far more survivable. The ability of Eldar jetbikes – a Troops choice – to seize objectives is also not to be sniffed at!
The Eldar codex actually translates pretty well into 5th Edition with very few redundancies. The army remains a solid, battle-winning force.
