Do you need a codex to play Warhammer 40k?
I am just starting warhammer and I wanted to know if I needed a codex to be able to play a game or if there is anything that you need besides a rule book, ruler, dice, and an army.
I would like to also know what the codex tells you about besides painting ideas and the army’s background.
Codexs are a essential part of the game they give you the run down of all the units what their stats are what equipment they can take special rules ect.
However with this in mind I assume you have a starter set that has everything you need to play a friendly game I suggest playing that a few times to get a hand of how the game plays. Once you have a good footing I would look up a local hobby store for a codex read through it a bit most stores don’t mind -although its polite to ask if you are going to take more time than just browse through it- they may even be able to give you some pointers.
Alternatively I will not mention where, but there are places online where you can download samples or abridged versions of the codexs although you will have to find that yourself. If you do though I still suggest owning a hard copy its easier and probably less embarrassing to pull the real thing out then a bunch of printed pages or a laptop when you have to show a rule to your opponent.
