Need a good Warhammer 40k book to read, any suggestions?
I’ve been interested in Warhammer 40k for quite some time now and started readings some of the novels about it. I’ve read Dark Apostle and Dark Disciple and i’m thinking about starting the Horus Heresy series. I’m interested in books to do with the Chaos Space Marines especially the Word Bearers.
If you’re a fan of space marines, then the Ultramarines Omnibus by Graham MacNeill is a rock n’ roll yarn of honour, blood, horror, victory and shame. Leave your brain at the door.
The Horus Heresy series is of patchy quality, but if you start with Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames then you won’t be disappointed.
For something more Chaos-y, you can either try Graham MacNeill’s Storm of Iron or check out Ben Counter’s excellent Soul Drinkers Trilogy (the latter is about the drift of a loyal chapter away from the Imperial orthodoxy).
If you want to explore some alternative views of the WH40k galaxy (i.e. not space marines) then Dan Abnett’s Gaunts Ghosts series is a tale of heroism and loss very much in the mould of Bernard Cornwell’s “Sharpe”. Or, for something rather more tongue-in-cheek, then Sandy Mitchell’s Ciaphas Cain novels take an alternative view of what motivates an Imperial commissar.
To go well off the beaten track and look at the 40kverse from a point of view that doesn’t involve perpetual war, then the Eisenhorn Trilogy can’t be beaten for thought-provoking adventure (although the author – Abnett again – does play fast and loose with the background somewhat).
Of course, if you want an all over view of the 40kverse, then why not buy an anthology? The Planetkill anthology has stories from space marines to Adeptus Mechanicus to Imperial Guard to the Inquisition and beyond. Or, for pure, wall-to-wall space marine adventure take a gander at the “Heroes of the Space Marines” – the Black Library’s newest anthology.
