What would the world be like if fantasy elements were real and grew up alongside history and modern technology?
What if the first man on the moon were a werewolf? How would World War II have been affected if orcs and centaurs were involved? What if goblins sailed to America before we did? Would unicorns be on the endangered species list? Would airplanes and cars run on magic rather than gas?
I’m thinking a watchmen-style with fantasy rather than superheroes; the total breakdown of how history as we know it if this were to happen if we lived with magic and the like.
I’m not into the fantasy genre that much, but, from what I’ve seen, the elements are either from a different dimension (10th Kingdom, Enchanted) or somehow keep their existence secret from the world at large (Twilight,Charmed).
I can’t think of any fiction where we know and live with these things in a modern setting. Can you?
Fantasy elements are real, and have always been with us. That’s why the world is the way it is. Their existence is ‘secret’ because by and large they exist and have their being in the unconscious (astral world) occasionally emerging into consciousness. You can think of examples of the sort of fiction you are talking about, because you named a couple. There’s plenty of others, like Buffy, Anne Rice, etc., etc.
