How much does it cost to get into Warhammer 40K?
I’ve been interested in the game, though I don’t know a lot about it. I like the idea of painting up an army though, and having them fight it out against other peoples armies, it sounds like fun.
But it also sounds like it could get pretty expensive to get into. What might it cost to get started?
Like all hobbies, from running a motorbike to stamp collecting, it can be as expensive as you like.
If you have in mind a rough idea of how many models you consider to be an “army”, then it’s probably fair to say that, if you shop clever, use eBay, trade second-hand with friends or through a local wargaming club or seek out discount online retailers, you will struggle to build any army for less than £1 (US$1.50) per model.
A lot of people baulk at the idea of an hobby that might cost £100-200 just to get started. But if you like the idea of collecting an army, assembling it, painting it and fielding it against opponents, the cost-benefit analysis shows that wargaming is a surprisingly cost-effective hobby.
A single model – for about £1, assuming clever shopping, but rising to as much as £10-20 for large, rare or heroic miniatures – will provide anywhere from one to ten hours’ enjoyment as you carefully assemble and paint it. And from there, it can continue to return its investment game after game if you make it part of an army and play regularly against your friends.
If you’re patient, skilled and lucky enough to raise your game to the right level, you can even get to the point where the hobby costs you nothing. For the last five years, I haven’t spent a penny on my hobby that I haven’t raised by painting and selling miniatures.
Not many hobbies can do that.
