Whats a overall good race to pick in warhammer 40k?
Um I might wanna start warhammer 40k cause my friend likes it and I might start collecting it so I was wondering whats a good race and the thing is im thinking about the tau but I herd that they are good at long range but are terrible at close combat and my friend has the orks and the thing is I wouldnt mind being the Tau but my friend If he beats me he will always use it against me so Im wondring Whats a good race that is good race against the orks?
Warhammer 40,000 really doesn’t work so simply. There’s no army or faction you can guarantee will be “good against orks”, because the orks can run so many variable lists. An army that would be good against the green tide will be rubbish against a Kult of Speed, and that’s just to name two possible builds, which each possess their own wide variations. A Kult of Speed with lots of Nobz on bikes will be vulnerable to things that a Kult of Speed with mobz in Battlewagons won’t.
By far the best approach is to ignore your opponent and to build an army that suits you. People tend to say things like “Oh, Tau are shooty” or “Tyranids are all about the Assault Phase”. In fact, almost any army can be tailored to suit any play style, so rather than worry at the outset about your play style, decide on which army you like the look of best. Which army, as I often ask, flicks your “ZOMG!” switch? Collecting, assembling and painting an army is a huge investment to money, time and effort, so you need to make sure you choose and army that really excites you and which makes you want to go back to the hobby desk time and time again until it’s all done.
Once you’ve picked that, you can then start to assemble your army. Now, most people start by simply picking the units they like the look of best and this is absolutely fine for the same reason that it’s best to pick and army you like best. But it does pay to get the codex first, check some of the big forums for advice and ask around your FLGS* for tips. But don’t pay these things too much heed. You will often hear that such-and-such a build is unbeatable or that “no one uses those!”
Use your brain and look for those units that suit the way you want to play the game. If you want to whittle your opponent down at range, or annihilate them up-close, to aggressively push forward into their deployment zone or to hang back and bombard them from afar… or a balance of all of these, look for the units that fill the jobs you want to do and don’t be afraid of being influenced by the pretty, shiny stuff occasionally. Piranhas are widely considered to be a poor choice for Tau but, my goodness, they don’t half look cool. And when they swoop on and fusion cannon your enemy’s nastiest tank to slag, you’ll be glad you made the investment, even if they die horribly in every other game.
