Which warhammer fantasy army?
I’m fairly new to warhammer and I wanted to know which of these armiesis best?
Dark elves
wood elves
warriors/daemons of chaos
dwarves
lizardmen
vampire counts
skaven
I have no idea what “fantasy sports” are, either. But this is a question about the tabletop wargame.
Now, on to the answer:
It depends on what you mean by “the best”. All of those armies are capable of beating all of the other armies in the right hands, with the right battlefield and the right army composition. Generally speaking, newer armies are more “powerful” – that is, give more punch for your points – than older armies, as the designers have been gearing up for 8th Edition Warhammer, which is due out in a few months (if rumours are to believed, and I think they are).
Therefore, the Dark Elves and Daemons of Chaos are the most powerful, with Vampire Counts coming a close third (yes, the Skaven book has also been released recently, but it’s a much more temperamental army, not well suited to competition use).
However, when picking an army, you must consider as much your attitude towards that army as that army’s disposition to its opponents. You could but the ultimate, all-comers-annihilator army of DOOM! But if the theme and spirit of the army doesn’t excite you, it will languish, forgotten, in its shrink-wrap while you do something more interesting, like cleaning your toenails or watching reality TV.
Whilst we all want our army to be victorious, it is important to remember at the outset that you need to buy and army which you will actually be motivated to build, paint and bring to the field against worthy opponents. This takes hours of time and that time will only be invested if you have an emotional connection to the army as well as a strategic one. So I strongly recommend picking an army based upon its miniature range, background and accompanying artwork: find the army that flicks the “ZOMG!” switch.
And should that happen to be Vampire Counts, Dark Elves or Daemons of Chaos, then good for you! Don’t let anyone tell you your army’s cheesy, beardy, broken or otherwise a bad army: it’s YOUR army and you will love it… and you’ll love it even more when it tables your opponent by the end of turn 3.
