What happens to all the extra parts of the space ship when inspace?
I always see in space movies the space ship go up then let go of the majority of the ship as they enter space and they just float off….do those parts seriously just stay floating in space? What happens to them?
It depends on the altitude and velocity (and travel direction) of the “extra part” at the time it breaks up from the ship.
If it’s going fast enough (about 5 miles per second) and almost parallel to the ground, it’ll basically stay in orbit of Earth. It’s then called “space junk” and there’s now plenty of it orbiting the Earth and it’s a serious problem because even a screw or a piece of metal lying around at that velocity just cuts through a satelitte or another spaceship. This doesn’t just “float in space” because it already has a velocity, and retains it. The atmosphere in altitude is very very thin but enough to slow it down, and over time it gets at lower altitudes (below about 50 miles) until it starts to burn up due to friction with the atmosphere; higher than that, it’ll just remain there until it hits something.
If the direction at which it is released is more “upwards” it’ll do a very “steeped” trajectory (a parabola, if you’ve already had geometry or calculus in school) which when drawn intersects the ground. If it’s going fast enough, it’ll burn up completely in the atmosphere; except if it’s large, at which point it’ll burn up and some of it reaches the ground.
