What canine-like animal (NO WOLVES) can thrive in marine west coast climate?
Do not answer with coyote, wolf, bear, cougar, mountain lion, bobcat, insects, plants, fish, squirrel, and birds (hawks, eagles, sparrows, etc.)
I need an animal that isn’t a wolf, but is somewhat like one, for my story. There are too many werewolf stories, so I want to use a similar wild canine that exists.
“Marine west coast climate” is vague to me. The climate in southern California is a lot different than that in Washington state. An animal that could live in one of those locations might not fare so well in the other.
If native animals are the only options, then I’m afraid you’ve ruled out every other possibility aside from foxes and dogs.
If any animal in the world is an option, as long as it is “wolf-like”, then dingos would possibly be ok. They could probably theoretically survive in a southern California climate, although realistically they would probably die of starvation or disease from dogs. Dingos are also technically a subspecies of gray wolf, so they may not be allowed.
Dholes could probably do ok in a WA climate, but again they would likely not realistically survive. Basically the same factors that extirpated wolves from the west coast states would also plague any wolf-like animal you attempted to release there. They are also quite rare and it would be very unlikely one would be released, even accidentally, in the US.
Hyenas are not even remotely related to dogs, aside from also being in the Carnivora order, but they are dog-like in appearance and diet and may work for your story. If it was acclimated to a cooler climate it could survive the weather, as they do this in German zoos. But (and I sound like a broken record), it would not likely survive based more-so on lack of suitable prey and lack of a clan (hyenas hunt in clans).
