Warhammer 40k Chaos Champion
Warhammer 40K Conversions?

Hi I have recently discovered the PC game warhammer 40k: dark crusade, i read into it and bought all of the other games including soulstorm. Then the massive world of modelling apealed to me and i was going to start an army. However, the sheer price is astonishing so I have decided to make a battlefield display, out of seperate smaller scenes, conversions and home-made landscape. I am planning on doing this over a long period and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas? I’m starting on a Bloodthirster which has been captured by agrey knight squad, their inquisitor being a emperors champion conversion. After that would be the chaos attempting to free it. i would like to focus on Khorne but if anyone can share their ideas ( which could involve and race =] ) it would be greatly appreciated.

The first piece of advice I’d give is to join one (or more) of the online communities, like www.warseer.com or www.dakkadakka.com. You’ll find thriving painting and modelling communities, some members of whom are Golden Demon winners and others who are experts in many areas of painting and modelling.

However, I’d also go on to say that, if the price of an army is so astonishing (and, actually, it really isn’t all that much – you can pick up an army for less than £200 that will give you hours of modelling and painting enjoyment before you even get so far as the wargaming table – and after that, the fun goes on for years!) then you’ll find the cost of cutting edge diorama-making no less shocking. The tools, models and materials are no less pricey than the army you want to avoid collecting.

Of course, you can always go cheap. Papier mache is dirt cheap and needs payment only for the PVA glue (very cheap). You can build trees out of coat hanger wire and clay. You can make your paving stones out of cardboard.

But be aware that this skinflint approach has its consequences. Your diorama will look and feel as cheap as it really is. Real quality comes from investment. Using pink or blue insulation foam to create the bulk of your terrain is pricey but worth it. Mount the foam on a rigid MDF base (probably at least 0.8mm thick) and you’ll have the rigidity you need to use wood filler to smooth off the surface. Get yourself proper coral sand and static grass for the surfaces rather than cheap grass flock (which looks more like lichen at 28mm scale). You might even want to look into brass etched plants, ferns and leaves to really add depth and character to your project.

You’ll also want to invest in florist’s wire (or a handful of paperclips – actually, either is fine in this case) to ensure a secure and reliable join between your models and the terrain on which they’re standing (also useful for the construction of big, awkward models like Bloodthirsters).

As for the “big diorama made up of interlinking vignettes”, I like the concept, but you’ll need to plan it in minute detail. Look at Victoria Lamb’s “Squabble” (see below) – this is a Warhammer Orc regiment, but each model is interacting with another model in the regiment (poking one in the eye or being kicked up the backside) – yet at the same time, the whole regiment still works when one or more models are removed. Your diorama would need to work in the same way.

This is an ambitious undertaking and you’d be well advised to get some solid practice in before attempting it if you want it to be something that can sit on your shelf and fill you with pride for years to come (as opposed to lurking at the bottom of a box, embarrassing you). I hate to say it, but building an army would be an excellent way to practice the construction and painting of models, learning what’s possible within the existing range and what needs you to learn the basic skills of converting, using greenstuff, wire and the “bitz box”.

Finally, let me repeat my first bit of advice: get thee to a forum. I’m a regular on Warseer and it’s a community with a great feel and loads of fabulous projects that might inspire or inform you. But although I promote Warseer, there are plenty of others, too. Dakkadakka, the Bolter & Chainsword, the Ammobunker, Librarium Online… the list goes on. Find one that suits you and let the creative juices flow!
