Are England just a bit too attack minded and defensively weak?
Last night as i watched England, i just think their performance came across too desperate to do well. Maybe the pressure is getting to the players and the manager. The defence was too slow at times and the keeper was awful. They badly miss Rio in my opinion, Had they been playing a better team say, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil or Italy. I think England would have been embarrassed What are your views?
My view is that it was just one of those nights. I always thought that England would always need to score at least two goals to win this match. Okay, the USA goal came as a result of a goalkeeping mistake. But after all the chances we had to restore the lead, then blaming the result all on Rob Green is just taking a short cut to thinking.
It is obvious that we miss Rio Ferdinand, no team in the World would lose a player like that, and not miss him. But we still have strong players at the back.
As for Heskey, he did set up the Gerrard goal, and he perform the role that Capello asked of him. But in my opinion, you can’t play Heskey up front, with Rooney behind if he can’t score goals.
There are English players who never seem to get a look in for England that would have scored given the opportunities that Heskey had, like Darren Bent, Bobby Zamora, Gabby Agbonlahor.
It may be possible to makes cases against any of these playing for England, but they’re nowhere near as strong as the case against Heskey. What mystifies me is how Heskey has had so many chances to play for England, while the players above have not.
Englands defence wasn’t the issue last night, the issue was that for all Englands dominance, we only managed to score one goal.
