Which Warhammer 40k army should my girlfriend play?
My girlfriend is looking to start playing Warhammer 40k with me, and we are trying to decide on an army that would be good for her. At first she was looking at Sisters of Battle, but got turned off by them by the idea of their absolute fanaticism, and some of the more macabre units like the Penitent Engine and Arco-flagellants.
I play a close-combat centered tyranid army, with all of my firepower coming from my monstrous creatures. Mostly, my army consists of genestealers, hormagaunts (with strength upgrades…these always surprise Space Marines who think that they are safe in Rhinos) and Termagants (w/ spine fists and adrenal glands for better CC effectiveness).
It seems the Sisters heavy use of fire would give her an advantage over my army for the most part (which is good…if she loses we’ll never make it past the first game 
) but the style and background of the army are also important factors to her.
Any expert advise?
If she doesn’t like the imagery of the Sisters, then clearly her priorities are stylistic and imaginative, not tactical or strategic. This is a vital thing, because collecting, assembling and painting a 40k army is a hugely time-consuming process that can take years (my marine army has been almost a decade in the making). The more excited you are by your army and the more you relate to them stylistically, the more you will be encouraged to build and then play with them.
To that end, then, I would suggest that your GF will want to play either Tau or Eldar.
If she’s an anime fan, then Tau is certainly the way to go and she can share her Aun’s sense of discomfort at the eating habits of her Kroot allies.
If she’s more into celtic and fairy stuff, then Eldar is the path for you. Elegant, artistic and obsessive, Eldar are a great-looking army with some new models (look for the new plastic jetbikes) on the horizon and a relatively new codex.
Both armies also have the advantage that, with most models being armoured head to toe, they are easy to paint quickly. For black undercoat, drybrushing and Foundation Paints will get you where you want to go in no time. For a white undercoat, dipping in watered down wood stain is a superfast way to get the basic paint scheme done in no time.
I should add, of course, that both the Tau and Eldar can tend to struggle against an army like Tyranids, but a clever use of wargear can still produce an army likely to give the Hivemind a serious headache.
