How to create the visual effect of lightning in home conditions?
I’m not interested much in plasma cubes or doing photos of lightning or anything like that – I wish to create a small lightning arc. Between two points – for example, 2 pieces of metal. It is a bit important not to be hurt by it:)

The answer is very different, depending on whether a lighting arc inside a glass vessel (near vacuum) would be ok; or OTOH whether this lightening arc must occur in air.
The inside-glass-vessel arcs are inexpensive.
1. The in-air case is much harder, because the breakdown voltage of air is 25 KV/inch. Thus 100KV is required for a 4-inch arc in air.
The cost of an adequate device (listed below) is directly proportional to: Length of arc required; brightness of arc required. If you want a 2″ dim arc in a fully darkened room, then a $100 vandegraff generator or jacob’s ladder will do the job. OTOH, an impressively bright arc spanning a foot or more, the machine costs many thousands of dollars.
There are 3 devices that can produce an arc in air:
a) A “jacob’s ladder”. I’ll provide a link to the wiki article.
