Desert Eagle pistol – show, or sport?
I’m as pro-gun as they get, but I’ve often wondered what purpose this weapon serves. It seems too bulky to conceal well, and perhaps a bit too large and heavy to maneuver well in a close to medium quarter gunfight.
I’m not sure if it’s a terribly good hunting arm, either.
Anyone care to “weigh in” on its practicality?
I can’t emphasize enough that I’m not trying to say, “no one should own, use or carry one” but I suspect that it’s more for show and certain types of target practice than it is for self-defense and hunting.
Somebody just wanted something as powerful as the .357 Mag, .44 Mag, and now the .50 Action Express but in an automatic platform. Other experiments shooting .357 & .44 Mags out of auto-loaders were fair to dismal. The rim created a problem feeding out of a box magazine.
The forerunners of the present day behemoth Desert Eagles used a rimless .44 magnum loaded from rifle brass like the .308 & shortened .30-06. Now we have the .10mm (ballistically similiar to the old .41 Mag.), and the .357 Sig (ballistically similar to the .357 Mag.) which are a different approach to the same solution–a magnum caliber handgun in auto-loader format.
I agree that the Desert Eagle is too, too big for practical applications but if that is your cup of tea, then… More power to you!
