Pointalism painting coloring question?
I am doing a pointalism painting of a girl with a violin. I have never done one before and it’s for a class. The catch…the only colors I can use are quinachridone magenta, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, and white. And it has to be completely in dots, with no mixing. Like if I want some green color I have to put a yellow dot next to a blue dot. And 90% of my painting is brown. I’ve been having so much trouble trying to make any shade of brown, it’s turning into a disaster! Does anyone have any advice on pointalism, colorings, or any websites that could help??!! (Due on Thursday)
I can’t overlap any colors and I can’t add in any colors but those four. So that won’t work at all.
I would suggest doing a few thumbnail size color experiments using four colors in various combinations. Find a color wheel if you need a reference. Remember the eye will do all of the mixing.
To get various tints and shades of each color it is not just the juxtaposition of the dots, but the ratio of one to the other. Take brown for example: Blue and orange are frequently used to make brown – since orange is not one of your colors use the magenta, yellow and blue dots in various proportions adding white dots to lighten the brown. Remember that some pigments are stronger than others, a warm brown would have more yellow, magenta, and less blue. I darker cooler brown would required adding more blue dots.
