What is the best Warhammer Fantasy starting army?
I’d like to start to play Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I have already painted the Battle for Skull Pass set and didn’t like the Dwarves or the Orcs and Goblins. I’d like to start an army (I would buy the battalion set and a hero) and I want to know which one is best for a beginner painter based on these factors.
* Easy to paint
* Fun to play on the board
* Overall coolness
* Does well against other armies
I am very smart strategically and won’t have a problem learning how to play any armies play style. I don’t care whether the army is good or evil. Though from what I have seen evil looks a lot more badass.

try the Dark Elves. They get nasty spells, good stats, good all-round balance of combat, range and magic, plus monsters and evil looks. Here’s how the armies balance:
Empire: good range, individually weak, some v. good units, some v. bad units. Gunpowder! Very easy to paint, not very fun to play as core units die in combat and magic normally fails. Cheap.
Lizardmen: powerful magic and some rock-hard combat infantry and cavalry. Weaker at range but still not bad. More difficult to paint, but very fun to play. Expensive but solid all-round army.
Brettonia: more elite human players. Much more emphasis on cavalry and magic; weak infantry. Difficult to paint, fun to play. Some very expensive, some cheap.
High Elves: good mix of magic, combat and range. Expensive but powerful units. easy to paint and quite fun to play.
Dark Elves: evil. good units, good all-round army for fighting everyone, not too difficult to paint and fun to play. Moderately expensive.
Wood Elves: flexible and range and magic based. Struggles in combat. harder to paint, expensive and requires good tactical ability to play well.
Dwarves: Solid infantry and gunpowder units; no cavalry and limited magic. easy to paint.easy enough to play but inflexible.
Orcs and Goblins: mix. Some very powerful combat units, other very weak ones. limited magic and cavalry, but some very good. Cheap. Easy to paint and fun to play.
Chaos: depends on your magic, but pure evil combat and magic juggernaut best describes them. expensive but devastating; will kill everything. difficult to paint, evil fun to play. Some of the best untis in the game, plus amazing monsters and daemons.
Beasts of Chaos: more brutal but more fragile army; requires nerves of steel and luck, easy to paint and quite fun to play, but little armour, so expect to be wiped out at range. Some very tough but expensive monsters.
Orge Kingdoms: solid troops and combat beasts, plus monsters, but will fail against massed infantry (Skaven, goblins and empire). difficult to paint. Ogre units are expensive, but your basic meat-shield goblin units are dirt cheap.
Vampire Counts: awesome units, some amazing powers. weak at range, but most of your infantry will be unbreakable. Invincible if played properly. Amazing magic and some v. good cavalry. Lots of very weak but very fun zombies and skeletons that will die in droves but will come back. difficult to paint well, but amazing fun to play. mix of cheap units and horribly expensive ones.
Khemri: more undead, very good mix of combat, archers and magic. Excellent spell casters and archers, weaker cavalry. Difficult to paint and fun to play.
Skaven: Pure evil. Massive Hordes of rat-men, mostly rubbish. Expect heavy casualties, but your elite units and spell casters are good. No cavalry per se; good monsters and light artillery. Just avoid mass panic and they’re fine. easy to paint, quite fun to play. Cheap.
