i was thinking about geting warhammer 40k assault on black reach and i wondered if i need the codexes or not and what they have other than backstory
You can play assault on black reach out of the box. However, all the special rules of the models and equipment upgrades are not included.The rules for assault on black reach just use the rules from the core rulebook. I would recommend getting the codex of the army you want, or both if you prefer, so that the two armies are played with all their rules.
In the codex you get the background, artwork, colour pictures of painted armies, unit and equipment rules and the army list. Basically, the codex contains everything you need to know to collect, build and game with an army.
Note, the older books had tips on assembly and painting but these are no longer included in the codex.
