Warhammer 40k Space Mrines?
I know i want to get a Marines army but I don’t know what specific chapter to pick. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Dark Angles, Blood Angles, and Templers as compared to vanilla marines?
The differences really are quite subtle in pure terms. They all have the same stats, armour and weapons and more or less the same unit choices.
The largest distinction has been made with the Dark Angels, whose new codex makes them far less flexible than other chapters (units of either 5 or 10 and nothing in between – all units have a veteran leader – reduced choice for wargear) but most of the smart money predicts that a lot if not all of these aspects will run through into the new Space Marine codex (expected release somewhere this Summer, given the imminence of 5th Edition 40k).
So – as with all of the important army decisions – the question comes down to which chapter design most speaks to you. Black Templars represent questing knights; Blood Angels are tragic heroes; Dark Angels owe more to secretive, Illuminati-style conspiracies; Space Wolves are vikings (in space!)… the list goes on.
If you can find it, I recommend tracking down the now-out-of-print book, Insignium Astartes. This includes a long list of “official” codex chapters with little or no official background. Some colour schemes are naff beyond words, whilst others are intruigingly evocative.
The important thing is to remember that you have a whole army of these buggers to paint, so make sure you choose the one that really gets your imaginative muscles twitching with excitement: that’s what’ll give you the determination to finish them all, in the end.
