Warhammer 40k Army Question?
I’m brand new to the game and wanted to know more about each of the divisions in the Space Marines. For example i know the Black Templars are more melee oriented, while Codex Marines seem to be more mechanized (these are just assumptions). Can anyone tell me how the many Space Marines play? or if all the ones in the Marine Codex play the same, the difference between Codex Marines, Dark Angel marines and Templar Marines?
Thanks
The best place to find the answer to your question is this website: www.bolterandchainsword.com. It’s a great forum for Space Marine players, and has boards for all of the different Space Marine armies – Black Templars, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and the chapters that use the standard Marine Codex (such as Ultramarines). You’ll find help on building army lists, and it’s a great place to go to get advice on which you’d prefer to play.
The standard Space Marine Codex is a great place to start in my opinion. You’ve got a good choice of heavy vehicles, such as Land Raiders, Predators, Whirlwinds, etc. As a new player, I think you’d benefit from the more balanced approach between lots of heavy firepower, and tough troops. But, if you want to play one of the chapters with their own unique rules, here’s some info on them:
Space Wolves: Their new codex is out this month, along with a whole load of new models, so you’ll be spoilt for choice as to what you can buy for them! They’re ferocious and savage fighters, and excel in close combat, so expect to get up-close and personal with your enemy, often at the expense of firing at a distance! Their codex is packed with some very tough HQs, and they have access to some great wargear – as expected, very much focused on hand-to-hand combat.
Blood Angels: You can actually download their codex for free on the Games Workshop website. They are a fun army, built around very fast troops – they can take Assault Marines (who have jump-packs) as regular troops, so they can whizz around the battlefield causing problems for you enemies from all directions! Again, these guys are very close-combat orientated, but you still get access to standard Marine armour choices, as well as a few unique to them – such as the Baal Predator and Furioso Dreadnought. They also get access to their own HQs and special units, such as the Death Company – who are particularly tough.
Black Templars: Unlike other Marine Chapters, they do not use Librarians (who are the pskyers – essentially wizards – of the Space Marine armies). In fact, they don’t tolerate psykers at all. They’re very much the religious zealots of the Space Marine chapters, constantly crusading. They have very effective troops, and are strong in close combat, with a host of special rules based on their religious fervor (Vows) which make them different to play.
Dark Angels: They get access to some very nice HQs and Librarian powers. They also get access to Deathwing terminators and the Ravenwing attack squad which are pretty powerful and can be taken en-masse to give you an army very different from a standard Space Marine force. I think they’re more shooty than the other chapters I’ve spoken about above. They’ve also got a fantastic background story!
Remember when choosing your army, don’t just judge on the way they play! Take a look at the models – do you prefer the look of one? Read the background information – which Chapter do you find the most appealing? The game isn’t just about building a competitive army, but having fun creating your own force of champions!
I would recommend popping into your nearest Games Workshop store and having a chat with the folks there. They’ll be able to explain better than me the differences between the playing styles of all these forces, and you may even get the chance to see one of these armies in action!
Which ever force you choose, happy gaming!
