How much of what Flavius Josephus wrote was accurate?
I was researching a little bit about this particular historian mainly because both Christians and Atheists/Agnostics have debated about something he supposedly wrote called “Flavium Testimonium”. Now there’s a small passage that talks about Jesus Christ being existent. Although I am very skeptical of the weak evidence that has been brought to the table, I have read another section in another record that Josephus wrote. The section has mentioned of the existence of King Herod. According to wikipedia, King Herod’s tomb has been found. The more interesting thing is, Flavius’s description of the location of the tomb was accurate. All of what I’ve described leads me to this question I ask. How much of what Flavius Josephus wrote can be classified as accurate?
Flavius was a upper class Jew who later worked for the Romans. He changed sides during the Jewish War. That is something you have to bear in mind. Flavius had to defend his position, both to the Romans and to the Jews as well. He wrote pretty accurate, but he was biased in several ways:
- he had to defend his switching of position
- he saw the Jewish revolutionaries are unruly scum
That doesn’t mean he wrote pure propaganda, just that he wrote with a strong opinion. If you take the above in mind, you get a pretty accurate picture of the events.
The passage about Jesus is a a forgery. It doesn’t fit in the context. Flavius was a upper class Jew (probably Sadducee though he may have been Pharisee) who would never see Jesus as the son of God.
