warhammer 40k imperial guards?
im starting to collect imperial guards in 40k but im not sure if i should paint them normal green like on the front of the box or paint them in snow camo?? what do you all think??
There are advantages both ways.
Having a unique and distinctive army is always an attractive option, and a snow camo – whilst not exactly unique – would certainly make them different to 90% of other Guard armies. That said, an arctic camouflage is no easy task to achieve. In real life, “arctic camo” generally means “white and nothing but white”, which looks dreadful on the tabletop. An arctic/wasteland or arctic/woodland camo, however, is dramatic and striking.
Of course, “dramatic and striking” also means hard work on the painting side. Here’s an arctic camo I did for a Space Marine scout:

Getting a smooth, crisp white base requires layer after layer of thinned Skull White, even over a strong base coat, like Astronomican Grey. The results are totally worth it, but painting an entire Imperial Guard army in this scheme is something that would require dedication lasting weeks at least, if not months.
By contrast, going for the traditional woodland/wasteland scheme may not be as dramatic, but can be achieved far, far quicker. In addition, you’ll find plenty of painting tutorials on the web – not least on the Games Workshop website – explaining how to achieve this effect or similar effects with minimal trouble, making it far easier to get a finished, painted army on the tabletop more quickly.
