Im new to warhammer. What’d be a good 1000 point tau army?
As it says in the title, i am new to warhammer. I have chosen tau as my faction, and would like to get some ideas for a 1000 point army to start off. My friend, also starting, is using space marines, so hopefully that’ll help somewhat. I just would love some expert opinions. NO TROLLS
Tau’s primary focus is shooting. While they do have some things that allow for close combat (koot) when you compare this to other armies close combat units they don’t match up. With shooting in mind the Tau have 3 main styles of play which are meant to be generalized as you can always mix and match to you play style.
The first style is troop heavy with fire warriors. Each troop has a 30” range str 5 shot with a markerlight you can hit and wound space marines (the common comparison when looking at stat lines) on rolls of 3 which is really good for a basic troop choice. As fire warriors don’t fair to well in close combat you may wish to have a devilfish parked close to each unit to move them 24” away from anyone coming at you if they get close.
The second style is the crisis suit list. Crisis suit’s allow for the most customizable list as they can take some form or another of every gun in the game. There are 2 main tactics used with the Suits list are hiding behind something, jumping out and shooting, then jumping back in the assault phase so you cant be shot; or utilizing their deepstrike ability to pop into key areas and blast away. The main issue with this style is it can be very hit or miss, literally, and you take fewer models so it does not fair well vs hoard armies (orc, tyranid, some guard).
The third play style is a Mech army with a lot of tanks. Combining the 3 heavy support choice tanks with troop devilfish tanks can be extremely fun. Tau have the advantage of their tanks always counting as obscure targets for 5 points (if they are shot you and you roll 4 or higher the shot doesn’t count) they have high armor value on the front for a skimmer and carry some of the best guns in the game. The downside of this list is similar to the Crisis suit list. Fewer models because of the points sink.
I recommend you try a battleforce box as it has a lot of choices (and it saves you money) and play with what is in there. If you see you like one type of play style more then another you can start to gravitate in that direction. Just remember even after you get one style locked down it will not fair well vs all armies. What may devastate one army (or army type) may not work well vs another.
