warhammer 40k: do vanguard vets get an extra attack?
i got the new space marine codex and was curious about this.
the vanguard veterans come with 2 attacks each. but since they have chainswords, does this give them an extra attack for a total of 3?

It depends on exactly what equipment you end up giving them. A basic vanguard veteran with a bolt pistol and chainsword counts as having an extra close combat weapon, so, yes, he’d get +1 Attack for that. But one who swaps with chainsword for a lightning claw wouldn’t (unless he also swapped his bolt pistol for another lightning claw).
