I need help playing my space marines?
I have 2 tactical squads, 2 assault squads, 1 terminator squad, a caption, chaplain in termi Armour, land raider, whirlwind, dreadnought and I need some help. I can’t decide on what I should buy, I was thinking tank. can some one help?
The army list you have at the moment is pretty comprehensive, and in itself would constitute a fairly competitive army.
What you decide to purchase next is dependent on a few factors. Firstly, how are you equipping your dreadnought? Will it be primarily ranged (and if so, anti-tank or anti-troop) or geared towards close combat? Are the terminators assault based, or geared up with heavy or special weapons? You need to aim to have a balanced list that can take on both horde armies like the Orks, as well as more vehicle-heavy armies. Do your tactical squads have heavy weapons? Sgts with powerfists? Balance is key, so when you’ve decided on the options you want to give your current units, you need to find what you’re missing in your army list. If, however, you know what opponents you’ll be fighting regularly (for example, if you’ve got a friend that plays Imperial Guard), you might want to concentrate on putting something together that’ll be good against that army.
There are a few things that I would consider immediately adding to your Space Marine force though:
- RHINOS: In my opinion these are absolutely essential for your tactical squads. Your average Space Marines isn’t the fastest troop choice, and he’s gonna need a ride to get to where he wants to be. You often need your troops to take and hold objectives, and if you don’t give your troops some mobility you will find yourself struggling in objective-based games. Also, troops foot-slogging across the board are easy targets – putting them in a Rhino will help to ensure they get to the enemy in one piece, and can do maximum damage when they get there! On a tactical note, my personal opinion is not to put any extra weapons on your rhinos – remember, they’re there to act as a transport, not double as a tank! If you do want this, consider getting a Razorback – essentially an armed Rhino, but remember these can’t hold as many troops. Don’t forget to put your terminators and chaplain in your Land Raider! You want to get these guys to the enemy as soon as possible!
- MORE TROOPS: Troops win games. Simple as that. They are the only units that can take and hold objectives, and many of the games you will play will be objective-based. Tactical squads are great, and don’t be afraid to add another unit of them to your army (with a Rhino!). Also, consider a Scout Squad. These are another troop choice, and can also cause a lot of problems for your opponent. Equipping them with sniper rifles, and adding Sgt. Telion to the squad can make a very effective unit.
- ANTI-ARMOUR: At first glance, your army could do with some more anti-armour choices. Remember, your land-raider may not be able to provide all the fire-support you’d like it to if you’re using it to transport your termies, and the Whirlwind is not great at anti-tank duty. So, what options do you have? Here’s my take on them:
– Vindicator: Good weapon, but a risky investment. It’s has poor range, and if your enemy manages to destroy it’s main cannon (pretty much it’s only good weapon!) before you get to attack, it’s a unit wasted. I would avoid myself, as I have never seen them perform particularly well compared to other options at your disposal.
– Predator: A good all-round choice, and with the weapons available to it, it can perform a number of duties on the table. A las-cannon armed pred can take out most enemy vehicles, whilst one with auto-cannons and heavy bolters can do a great job of taking out enemy troops.
– Devastator Squads: basically Space Marines equipped with heavy weapons. You can get a good flexible squad together – consider las-cannons and missile launchers. My regular Space Marine opponent uses these to great effect, and they are a very good option for you to take.
- DROP-POD: Not essential, but I would consider it. One of these dropping behind your enemy will really give them a shock! If you’ve got a close-combat dreadnought, he’d be a great choice to put in there. You could also consider getting yourself a Sternguard Veteran squad and putting them in, to cause havoc amongst your foe on one of their flanks. Mobility and flexibility is important in many armies, and Drop-pods will help to give you this.
I would strongly advise you go and check out some of the 40k community sites on the web. There are loads, and they will help to give you additional information on tactics, unit selection, and putting together a fun and competitive army. I would recommend signing up at the Bolter and Chainsword website and hitting the boards there. It’s a very Space Marine focused site, and has a lot of very experienced players who are friendly and happy to help.
Hope this answer has helped. Happy gaming!
