Warhammer 40k Chaos Space Marines?
I’ve just recently found interest in Warhammer 40k and Fantasy tabletop. I was originally going to field Tyranids but figured i’d save a “Swarm” army for larger scale battles in the future. I decided upon Chaos Space Marines. So far, my friend sold me a squad of Noise Marines, and I plan on ordering Abaddon for my HQ, a squad of Marines, and either a squad of Plague Marines or a Havoc Squad. For starting off, we will be playing 1500 pt battles. Any tips or advice on what would be wise in fielding next would be great. If it helps any, he intends on fielding an Eldar army.
Your choices so far suggest a largely static force that will manoeuvre into position and wait for the enemy to bring the fight to them. Noise Marines are a good counter-assault unit and Plague Marines a brilliant objective-holding unit (probably the best in the game).
I would suggest adding a squad of Chaos Terminators to put alongside Abaddon and either mount them in a Land Raider or teleport them into the field to disrupt enemy attacks. Abaddon is the one of the toughest hand-to-hand units in the game and with five ablative wounds (i.e. chaos terminators) he can afford to run the gauntlet against damn near anything, but he needs to make it into combat with something important to be worth his points.
To enhance the fire support you will need to whittle down a fast-moving opponent, consider adding a pair of Vindicators. Although they only have a 24″ range, they are highly effective against the fragile armies of the Eldar when they come inside that range and, with two of them, you can pepper-pot forwards (moving one and firing the other, then alternating) to force opponents off vital ground and objectives. Use the Havoc squad, then, to pick off enemy anti-armour units that would threaten your Vindicators.
Finally: read your codex and the rulebook. Read it often and do your best to memorize every element, especially those related to your army list. Nothing messes up a battle plan like discovering that you aren’t actually allowed to do that thing you thought you could do.
