Was Warhammer 40K a waste of money for me?
I’m 13, and have had warhammer 40K for 2 years. I have invested quite a bit of money into it and have a 2,500 army, or somewhere close to it. I’m thinking its a waste of money for I havn’t done much painting. My mother enjoys doing the painting, but recently I am getting intrested and am beginning to paint. I have never really had anyone to play it with, have played it only a few times, but my friend has got the starter set recently, and is buying the tau after he paints the starter set. We will play it a lot after he gets tau.
With this information, do you think it was a waste of money? I like it…
At 13, it can be hard to get the most out of the tabletop wargaming hobby. As well as being a creative and intellectual experience, at its best, it’s a social activity, too.
The creative aspect begins with the miniatures – building, basing and painting them – but doesn’t end there. Many players are inspired to write prose to accompany their armies or to bring to life characters of their own imagination. Others create artwork of original designs, or depict mighty battles between their forces and those of their friends.
Intellectually, the hobby begins at the point of learning the rules, designing your army lists and devising strategies to overcome your friends’ armies. At its finest, this aspect of the hobby leads players to competitive tournaments that can be found all over the world. But beyond that, some players are moved to write articles for forums or online fanzines, share detailed battle reports or even start their own podcasts, discussing every aspect of the hobby. Getting to grips with the aspects of probability, chaos (with a small “c”) and game theory can be a lifelong fascination.
But socially is where the game really comes into its own. Gatherings of like-minded gamers, at clubs, painting groups, conventions and popular hobby stores can be opportunities to meet new people and make lifelong friendships, to get involved in community activities or even raise money for charity, as well as to enjoy the game.
Not only that, but the Brownian Motion of social gaming will open your horizons to other games from the popular (Warhammer Fantasy Battles) to the obscure (Star Grunts 2), and from the battlefields of the far future, to the trenches of the Somme, deep into the void of space and into worlds and times that you’ve scarcely yet imagined.
But you’re 13. There’s no rush.
It’s traditional for young gamers to put aside what are perceived as “childish things” to take what we refer to as the BBB (Beer and Babes Break). This usually happens between about 13 and 17. Then, a few years later, once in a stable relationship, perhaps with some disposable income in your pocket and a bit more confidence socially and personally, the gamer is reborn. This is often sparked by just “dropping into” Games Workshop on the way past.
You’ll save yourself a lot of money if you don’t sell, give away or (worse!) throw away your minis now, because they’ll come back to inspire you when the BBB is out of the way.
Having said that; if you’ve still got someone to play with, then don’t pack them up just yet. And if you’re getting into the painting, then why not join one of the big (well moderated) forums to see what other people are doing, hobby-wise. Share some of your work and be inspired by others. Who knows? In twenty years’ time, you might find that you can actually make a living painting toy soldiers.
