can someone please tell me how to play warhammer 40k?
i just started collecting space marine but i dont know how to play. i know i could just buy the rule book, but its too expensive and i spent all my pocket money on the actual figures.

The rules to play Warhammer 40,000 are contained in a small but dense booklet that couldn’t possibly be replicated with any degree of accuracy here on Y!A.
If you’ve started collecting Space Marines, then good for you! You’d be well advised, therefore, to save up for the “Assault on Black Reach” boxed set. It’s less than £50, which might seem a lot to you but it contains two small armies (one of marines and one of Orks), dice, measuring sticks, rulebook (in handy A5 paperback format) and introductory guide.
Being keen to start playing, you’ll need more than just the rules. For a start, you’ll need to get your hands on the Space Marine codex (£18) before you can put together a proper army (the AoBR boxed set gets around this by providing simple scenarios using the miniatures in the box). Plus, perhaps a little obvious but it merits saying, you’ll need an opponent.
From your use of the term “pocket money” rather than “allowance” I’m going to assume you’re in the UK. If so, you should check out the Gaming Club network. There’s a list of their clubs in every issue of White Dwarf, as well as on their website (see below). They’re well spread so unless you live in the depths of the Scottish Highlands, there’s a good chance that there’s one near you.
Most clubs welcome younger players and will have someone who will be happy to play an introduction game, explain some of the rules and take you through the basics of designing an army.
At the end of the day, though, Warhammer 40,000 is a hobby that requires the spending of money. The initial investment for the rules, codex and enough miniatures to get started is rarely less than £100 and that’s before including paints, glue, additional miniatures, tanks and the endless plethora of additional bits and bobs one can buy (terrain, boards, flock, display bases, special effects…). You can do well on a limited budget by clever shopping on eBay and budget online retailers like Maelstrom Games, but if you’re shy about shelling out the cash, then this is probably not the hobby for you.
