Need help choosing warhammer army?
ive already got a very small army of vampire counts but decided i want to have an army with a little more kick in it such as bretonians or wood elves can anyone help me choose???
More kick than Vampire Counts? *Nothing* has more kick than VCs!
I suspect that there’s something other than tactical decision going on here. It’s called “army envy”. Veteran wargamers get used to spotting the signs because we experience it so often: a new army is released is new models and a new army book and all of a sudden our boring, old army is looking like a pale effort beside what our *new* army would look like if only we make the sacrifice of abandoning our current project and starting the new one…
Of course, here matters are more complex. The VCs are, after all, the new kids on the block. No one has newer, shinier or sexier models than them. But I suspect you’ve taken your “very small” army to the tabletop a couple of times and had your elongated canines kicked out and your undead backside handed to you. “Look how many peasants those Brets can take with only 1000 points!” you think to yourself. Or, “Those wardancers made mincemeat of my skellies – I should get me some of that!”.
My first suspicion is that your “very small” army consists of a tooled-up VC and a couple of regiments of skeletons with maybe a small unit of Black Knights. Worse still, it may have just the skellies and something else big and points-hungry like a corpse cart or Varghulf. If so, then you’ve got a good basis for a larger army but a very poor basis to fight at less than 1000 points. Small armies need to mximize the strengths of their particular army list. In VCs, this is the combination of hideously-nasty magic and vast numbers of cheap troops. A small VCs list should include no more than one, relatively weak Vampire, plus a necromancer (or two ‘mancers with no Vamp). This will give you maximum oppotunities for Danse Macabre and Raise Dead – the two essential tools in any undead spellcaster’s grimoire. Add a unit of Dire Wolves for that essential light cavalry unit and fill out your Core units with skellies and zombies.
If you were initially attracted to the VCs by their imagery and great models then dropping them for something else on a tactical basis will simply leave you yearning for the gothic darkness of Sylvania, however green the fields of Bretonnia or the woods of Lorien may appear.
Stick with your instincts and work on refining your VCs.
