Are space wolves in warhammer 40k good?

All of the army choices in 40k are more-or-less balanced. Some armies are considered by the cognoscenti to be superior, but the advantages of these would not be apparent to new players, nor would they have the know-how to capitalize upon them.
As a new army – the most recent until Tyranids come out in a couple of weeks – the Space Wolves are amongst the most competitive, although they have been written with a few odd rules issues that are still being ironed out.
When it comes to choosing a 40k army, bear in mind that any choice will require hours and hours of effort – collecting, assembling and painting alone will often take weeks, months or even years. As a result, your choice of army should not be based on which one you think will take the most scalps on the tabletop, but on which you think will excite your imagination sufficiently to send you back to the paints, time after time, because the vision they summon in your mind is too cool to ignore.
