What’s the best starting point for building a Warhammer 40K Army?
I want to start playing Warhammer 40K so want to start building an army. Where should I start?
Many people are told to start buy buying something GW puts out called the Assault on Black Reach starter set, but I’ve never really liked it; you get a basic version of the rules, stripped-down rules for all of your models, terrain, and admittedly quite a lot of useful things…but you’re paying for at least one army you don’t need. It will get you playing, but it won’t get you equipped with the sort of army you’ll want to keep playing with.
I’d suggest you first visit a Wh40k wiki like Lexicanum and look at the various armies until you find one you feel like playing; at that point you can buy the codex (army-specific rulebook) for your particular army, as well as a copy of the wh40k rulebook itself. Once you have your codex, you can start building an army list, and once you have THAT you can start intelligently buying troops. You’ll also want the template pack they release in green translucent plastic, but everything else is basically household materials. I’d recommend buying an HQ unit and actual Troops choices first, since there are several missions you can play with just Troops if you don’t have everything you need for an objectives-based game against another full army. Troops are also less daunting to paint, since they’re a set of small projects rather than one huge one.
