Child suffering with ITP since May 2005, now age 13, blood group o-ive, platlets remain around 20K even less?
Purpura appearing on legs probably since age of 6, diagnosed as ITP at age of 12 when pin spot dots appeared on lips then in mouth, then on legs and finally on arms. Platlet count went down to zero on few occasions. Did not response to 65mg of deltacortril pills daily. Good response to mythile prednisolone at 1000mg daily but no response to below 250mg. Excellent response to IVIG (plt count 200K to 435K) and kept on IVIG for initial five months and then on vincristine for one and a half month (10 injections of 2mg each weekly, plt cont 40K to 60K but terrable side effects) and finally on colchicine 2mg daily, platlet count up to 40K but gradually response to colchicine diminished and colchicine is being tapered off. Currently taking Vitamin C 500mg daily and Vitain K 10mg daily alongwith homeopathic medicine and platlet count remain between 7K and 20K. Is there any guarantee that splenectomy will solve the problem? or any other treatment with no or less side effects?
Hmm…Im not sure but the spleen is the major site of platelet destruction, but removal of the spleen will only bring up the platelet count in 50% of people.
Other treatments when the disease does not respond to initial treatment are:
Oral danazol
High-dose gamma globulin injections
Drugs that suppress the immune system
Passing the blood over a protein A (Prosorba) column, which filters antibodies out of the blood stream
Anti-RhD therapy can also be useful in people with specific blood types
MAYBE!!!In children, the disease often runs its course without treatment.
