I’m thinking of starting my warhammer hobby again, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice?
I’m not sure if I want to start with warhammer or warhammer 40,000 – Does anyone know which armies of warhammer & 40,000 are the easiest to paint/cheapest army to collect? I won’t be participating in any battles yet, I’ll just be collecting & painting them as a hobby until I feel I’m ready step it up and participate in my local games workshop store.
The problem with going into it with the “what’s the cheapest?” attitude is that you often find that, because you’ve picked your army for financial reasons, you lack the emotional connection that’s necessary to drive you to actually build, paint and play with it.
Generally, if financial constraints are important, it’s possible to find just about anything you want at a discount either by buying second-hand on eBay or by going to online discout retailers.
What I’d recommend is going to the main website at http://www.games-workshop.com and giving all the ranges a really good browse. You’ll find loads of articles explaining the background, different units and tactics of each army. The one you want to pick is the one that most makes you go “wow!”
For some people, there’s nothing better than an army of pustulent, gribbly Nurgle daemons dribbling their way across a battlefield. Others glory in the clean, crisp nobility of a High Elf battleforce. Still others find themselves sucked in by the gothic, heraldic splendour of a Space Marine army in its full glory.
Of course, if you’re starting as a hobbyist, you have a certain amount of leeway. You can buy a few of the basic sets of the armies that most light your fire and spend some time painting them up. Don’t worry about the ones you later decide you don’t want: you can either put them aside and come back to them as an army later or you can sell them again on eBay to recoup the money and maybe make a little extra to put into more of what you fancy.
I’d also say that you can easily play battles from having as little as 4-500 points. In fact, this size army is great for learning the basic rules and for knocking out a game in under 45 minutes. You can start playing once the models are built and then paint them as you go along. This even gives you more of that sense of narrative that a good army needs: add trophies from defeated armies or add battle-damage to those squads that take really bad maulings.
However, having said all that, I will now actually answer the question.
Generally speaking, the smaller the army, the cheaper it is to buy. In this respect, the cheapest army has long been (and still basically is) the Deathwing Terminator Assault Force. You can easily field 2000 points for less than £100 (£200) if you shop around. They’re also easy to paint: prime in black. Over-spray with Skull White and dip into pine wood-stain. You could paint a whole army of fifty Terminators this way in about 30 minutes once you know what you’re doing.
For Warhammer, the easiest army is probably Chaos Warriors, for the same reason. New Army Book is released this month. It’s not quite as easy to paint them, but you can get a decent finish by just dry-brushing Boltgun Metal over a black undercoat. You can then finish the whole thing off gradually over time, doing the fur cloaks and horses’ flesh and suchlike.
