in warhammer 40k how does space marine chapters affect play?
i.e in any way is a certain chapter better than another
No chapter is “better” than any other (or everyone would play just the one chapter!). But there are codex chapters and non-codex chapters.
The codex chapters are all covered in the new Space Marine Codex, which includes rules for special characters that convey “Chapter Tactics” on their armies: Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists are, for example, Stubborn; whilst White Scars are Fleet. There are several other variations, the details of which can be found in the codex.
The non-codex chapters have their own codexes (if you follow me). At the moment, these include the Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Black Templars and Space Wolves (and their successor chapters). Most of these are a bit outdated (except Dark Angels and Blood Angels) and are due for an overhaul at some point in the not-too-distant future.
