In Warhammer 40k, how is it possible for Tau to beat Orkz that have their men in 3 wartrucks?
The guy that I go against does the same thing every time. He has 1 wartruck with a warboss and a bunch of souped up mega-nobz, another wartruck with a warboss with nobz and 1 last wartruck with a shooter/sluggaboyz (3 attacks a turn). They all have “red paint” allowing them to move 13in, disembark, and assault an additional 6in.
On a 6×4 legal table, I find it hard for Tau to maintain distance while doing damage. And if I pick a lot of forces to destroy the trucks I don’t have anything left to take the orkz out.
Any advice???
I think you may mean Battlewagons? Wartrukks are armour value 10 and if he’s in those, field hordes of firewarriors and just shoot the trukks out from under them (firewarriors penetrate trukks on a 6 and glance on a 5). Battlewagons are armour 14 though and are a harder prospect.
Suggestion 1: relies on you getting first turn and is risky:
He will probably field their battlewagons dead on the front of their deployment zone, 24″ away. Field a unit of 3 Piranhas and turbo boost them to sit 1″ in front of his battlewagon withe nobs in it. If your Piranhas are 4″ apart he can’t go in between them as you can’t move within 1″ of an enemy model unless assaulting or tankshock/ramming. This will stop him from moving and allow you to shoot him. If he rams the Str of it will be low so shouldn’t punch through even the low piranhas armour. Next turn if your piranhas survive, use their multimelta equivalents to pop the battlewagon. Can work, I stagnated an entire ork army that way once because they’d deployed everything in a column, so the front guys couldn’t move and niether could the back. the Piranhas died, but it gave me 2 turns of shooting without them moving an inch!
Suggestion 2: tanks:
Feild your army in Devilfish and hammerheads. Focus on getting the orks out of their vehicles and then make sure you stay away from them. Order of priority would be: Mega-nobz, Nobz, others. Hammerheads are great for popping tanks and killing large numbers of orks (with its large blast shot) whilst still mantaining mobility.
It is a difficult tactic to stop, but Orks pretty much have no ranged ability for popping tanks so if you peel them out of theirs and focus on staying away from them (keeping in mind the Waaagh! ability), then you should be ok.
