I am writing a fantasy novel, any suggestions for character names?
I was inspired by eragon and the night angel trilogy. Aswell as warhammer and Oblivion. Although i assure you, my ideas are origonal. Any ideas for the names of the main country, something that sounds medieval because this country is the home to knights. And any character names, origional and diferant names would be great.
First, there’s nothing wrong with being inspired by other people’s work. That’s one of the reasons people write, to inspire others. Second, naming is easy. Easy easy. First, think of the kind of world you want to have, is it something completely original? Or is it based upon a period or place on earth?
If its completely original, you can do whatever you want. Your main character can be named Pwrtls or whatever you deem appropriate.
Now, if it is based on a certain place or time on Earth, as most fantasy books are (Lord of the Rings is mostly Welsh, for instance, Harry Potter is just simply England), then you can look to those places for names. Tolkien’s names seem very unique and original, but a glance at Welsh names and the Welsh language will show you that he merely altered an existing language to create his own. Well, I shouldn’t say merely, but you can definitely see the steps he laid for himself to create the world of Middle Earth there.
Warhammer, you will find, uses German names a lot, as well as old English names.
