Do you think that high school determines what you do in life and how successful you get?
Of course the belief is that the valedictorians and those who graduate honors will generally end up getting high paying jobs and making something out of their lives. The Valedictorians I knew ended up falling short of expectations and currently most are barely making around 40k to 50k. One of my friends decided to work after high school (he graduated with a C average), go to community college, transfer to a well renowned university and currently he is finishing his masters at, guess where…
Stanford.
As a guy (I am 29 years old) who sees many kids intern at the place he works at and sometimes talks to different kids about high school, I always see the top student falling short of expectations and the middle of the pack students or below average students somehow making something of themselves. Of course those who are just at high school to cause trouble and bully others usually never get anywhere in life either.
Anyways, what is your take on this?
Honestly, I don’t think high school grades mean much, unless you want to get into your top college your freshmen year. That would mean the kids with the best grades would get into better schools, but that doesn’t mean they will end up better off than the average kids who go to community college the first 2 years and then transfer. BTW, I’ve seen kids with straight A’s go to community college, so it’s not just for kids who got average grades in high school. I graduated with a good GPA at the end of high school and I just finished up my first 2 years at community college. In the Fall I’m transferring to a state school to finish up my Bachelors of Science in Dietetics.
I think grades matter, but they aren’t the end all and be all. I recently just took Anatomy and Physiology at the community college, and there were these two anal women in the class who could not handle getting anything less than an A. You should strive to do your best, but some people need to realize they can’t get A’s in everything, and even if you get all A’s that does NOT guarantee you a good job.
When I was younger, I thought that, but I don’t think that anymore. I think the important thing is to do your BEST, keep on trying, and to know what you really want to do in your life. The people who never give up succeed.
And also it’s a misconception that people with all A’s are intelligent. Many of them are just average intelligence, but they just study hard to get their A’s. There are some lazy geniuses who get C’s in all their classes.
Anyway, I think you made some good points, though. I think people put too much on HS valedictorians.
