Warhammer named pieces rule “may be used”?
A friend of mine is looking into making his own divergent space marine chapter. He is looking at Captain Shrike but before he spends the money we wanted to know if the piece says”May be used in a raven guard army of 1500 points or more” does that mean he can ONLY be used in the raven guard or can he be used otherwise or can he convert the piece and make it a differant named leader for divergent space marines?
Strictly, Captain Shrike can only be used in a Raven Guard army. That’s what the rules say and that’s what they mean. Taking Captain Shrike with an Ultramarines army would be completely inappropriate.
However, this is where the “counts as” rule comes into effect. It is perfectly possible to say that your friend’s army “counts as” a Raven Guard army and, thus, include Captain Shrike (or a character with a different name and a remarkable resemblance to the good captain).
But if your friend wants his army to “count as” a Raven Guard army, he must also take the Traits listed for the Raven Guard. It is the Traits that mean that another army can “count as” Raven Guard rather than anything else. No Traits. No Shrike.
Having said all that, there are two other ways to include the good captain in an army:
1) You just let him. For non-tournament play, it’s perfectly allowed to ask your opponent if he’ll let you break a rule or two for the sake of something cool. I can’t think of anyone who’d object mightily to Captain Shrike appearing in a non-Raven Guard army in a pick-up game.
2) You use the Captain Shrike model (with jump pack and twin lightning claws) for a normal Space Marine commander or master character. This way, he can use the model without having to worry about Traits or Shrike’s special rules. This is quite a common use for Special Character types. I have Ursarkar Creed as a Heroic Senior Officer in my IG army, for example: no special rules, just a cool model.
