Can I start collecting & painting the an Eldar army without their codex (Warhammer 40k)?
Long story short; I want to start collecting a Warhammer 40k army this Christmas (and play with them). Eldar are by far my favourite. My problem? Well; this Wednesday my dad is taking me to the nearest games workshop to get some of my first models, tools and paints.
The thing I’m worried about is I’ve already organised with my granddad for him to get me the codex (for Christmas day). I was wondering do you need the codex to, I don’t know, tell you any specific colours you have to paint certain aspect warriors? Like is there a specific green I have to paint Striking Scorpions or a specific colour for Farseers?
Also regarding this; do I need to choose a craft world to colour my army as? can I make up my own scheme?
I’m a bit confused and completely new to this. Thanks in advance for any help! 
You’ll need to read the Eldar Codex before you can play but there are zillions of recommended army lists on the internet you can copy.

Eldar are one of the most difficult armies to learn how to use but you should definitely go with the army you like the best so stick with Eldar.
Since you’re just starting out you may find it easiest to follow the standard Games Workshop color recipes but you can paint them any color you like; Eldar Striking Scorpions have their own paint called “Striking Scorpion Green” but I’ve seen them painted black, grey, blue, yellow, white, cream, metallic and multi-colored.

Games Workshop stores are a great place to start buying because you can view the miniatures in the display case and talk to other gamers but they are NOT the cheapest place to buy GW miniatures!

By the time you’ve prepared your first box of minis and scraped off the mold lines the postman will arrive with the rest.
Don’t buy your brushes and tools from Games Workshop (their brushes are okay but over-priced), all the experienced painters use Winsor & Newton or Raphael brushes. Art supplies shops are usually a bit of a rip-off, you can buy brushes for half the price online.

I have several brushes but I mainly use the size 3 and the size 1 – note that it is “pointyness” of the tip that matters *not* the size!

I forgot to mention primer; GW primer is expensive and so is Halfords primer but if you look around your local discount/budget tool shop (every town has one) you’ll find cheap car primers like “Hycote” which work just fine and cost about £2.50. I use white but a lot of people prefer grey or black; the important thing is to spray lightly in quick puffs.
