If your budget is less than $40K, which pre-owned cross-over SUV would you buy and why? ?
BMW X5, Mercedes Benz ML, Lexus RX, Porsche Cayenne, Infiniti FX, Range Rover(not a crossover but oh well ) etc…
The pre-2006 MLs are not really worth a look when the 2006-present models are available. They are exponentially more reliable, handle better, look nicer, and are free of so many first-generation issues. And finding a 2006-2007 for $35,000 might be entirely feasible in this economy.
The X5 is incredibly underpowered. Even the sport trim (the 4.4 or 4.8i, depending on the year) is still not quick at all.
Forget the Cayenne. You could do so much better for that price.
The Acura MDX is an excellent vehicle. It is built on the Honda Odyssey platform so it is a crossover and quite reliable. I have never heard anything bad said about them except for their less-than-remarkable fuel economy.
The FX is just hideous. I still fail to see why people want this car.
The Rang Rover is among the most (if not the absolute most) unreliable cars on the market. Jeep and Land Rover usually come in dead last in that category. There’s a reason an $80,000 truck loses $55,000 in value in THREE years. This is true, look for yourself on autotrade.com. Those things are slow abominations. And the Range Rover Sport has been panned by critics for having staggeringly low fuel economy numbers and not much power to justify the ratings.
My vote: Acura MDX.
