Should I collect Tau or Necrons in Warhammer 40k?
Hi, I am new to Warhammer 40k and am wondering if I should start a Tau or necron force? And if you answer could you please tell me who would be a more suitable and fair opponent out or Tyranids or CHaos Daemons (My friend plays nids and Daemons and I want to know what army he should use for a fair fight depending on what army I collect).
Based on the fact that each force is organized using the points system, in theory two forces of equal points should be a fair match-up. The problem is the new rule set. Since Warhammer 40K has gone to 5th edition, the Necron codex hasn’t been updated to match – so many of their strengths are lessened somewhat. They’re still a very strong army model for model, and much more forgiving on new players, so in that respect I think you’d do well with them. They’re also quite easy to paint, which is a plus.
On the other hand, because of the lack of variety in the models, they can get a bit… monotonous. The Tau are definitely a different playstyle, and might take some getting used to – they have outstanding ranged weaponry, but against two armies that like to get up close and personal in assault, you might have issues. My brother uses Tau, and I really ruined his day a few times with my assault army of Orks.
As far as your friend’s army choices, I don’t have much experience against Chaos Daemons, since very few people I know use them. That’s nothing against the army, it’s just how it turned out in my gaming circles. The Tyranids are a brand new codex, and as such, people are still working out the kinks – right now, it might seem as if they’re ‘over powered,’ especially if built in certain ways.
My advice would be to buy both books – since you might eventually collect both armies (I have several, for example, and own the books for armies I don’t even collect just so that I can know what my opponents are up to). Once you have both armies, run a few test games with your friend, borrowing some of his models with a “this counts as a…” thing going on – that way, you can see how they work without having to shell out a bunch of money for an army you’re not going to have fun painting and playing with.
Hope that helps!
