do space marines need backpacks in 40k?
To be legal in 40k do they need to have a backpack, or only the figure with gun, legs, torso, head and shoulders? I’m talking about 2nd edition figures that I would be using in 5th edition.

In an official game such as at a tournament or something like that then yes, The Backpack or Powerpack is what actually Powers the Space Marines Power Armor, if they don’t have that pack on they aren’t going to be able to move or at least not very fast if the motors in the armor aren’t working.
