What Tabletop War Games Are There?
Hi i just recently got into Warhammer 40k i play chaos marines and was wondering what other war games are out their, i would prefer Fantasy or Sci-Fi ones but i’ll try out some history based ones as well.
I would also like links and personal opinions on the games if possible. thanks for any help.
If you like Warhammer 40,000 then I assume you prefer hobby-oriented games, involving assembling and painting miniatures, as well as the tabletop strategic/tactical aspect of the game.
In which case, you should, of course, begin by looking at Games Workshop’s own stable of games. Besides 40k, there’s the high fantasy Warhammer Fantasy Battles games and – related but different – the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game (basically a skirmish game for 20 models or fewer), and the War of the Ring (a large-scale battle game, using the same miniatures).
I personally find the new edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles over-intricate. The game’s core rules are strong, with good levels of both tactical and strategic thinking, but the interactions of different armies, with their own special rules and parochial balancing, and particularly the enhanced effect of magic means that the element of chance in the game is now extremely great. Of course, it could just be that I’m losing a lot and I’m bitter!
The Lord of the Rings games are excellent. The SBG is more narrative-driven and, if you play a game with a specific story in mind, you should have a great time, win or lose. WOTR shares many aspects of the new Warhammer game, but because the differentiations between the different armies aren’t as substantial, strategy and tactics still play a much greater role than chance, in my opinion.
Beyond those, one should also be aware of Games Workshop’s excellent, but oft-overlooked, Specialist Games section. The rules for these are free to download and can often make use of existing models from your collection. I’m a fan of most of these, especially Inquisitor, Bloodbowl and Battlefleet Gothic (a space-combat game). Game design tends to be superior, although the games are by no means perfect (especially Inquisitor!).
Moving beyond the shores of Games Workshop, Privateer Press produces the critically-acclaimed Iron Kingdoms miniature battle games: Warmachine and Hordes (essentially the same as, and integral with, Warmachine), as well as the collectible miniature game, Monsterpocalypse (a very silly and fun homage to the great monster movies of the 60s and 70s, now bringing in the early manga cartoons of the 80s).
Wyrd Games is the producer of Malifaux, an exciting new skirmish game that uses cards instead of dice. As well as being an innovative game, it has a rich (if occasionally contradictory) background and powerful imagery (which is often quite adult in nature).
I would also be remiss not to mention Flames of War, the family of World War 2 battle games from Battlefront. Loosely based on the Warhammer 40,000 game, the mechanics have evolved in their own right. The game is played at 15mm scale, with the intention of allowing you to field substantial armies and to play out your games over a scale of terrain much larger than that offered by Warhammer 40,000 (which is about 30mm scale). Split into Early, Mid- and Late War versions (the march of technology means that a Late War force would normally annihilate an Early War force, although you’re free to try such an anachronistic confrontation, if you’re brave!), it is much more intended to be a “fun game” rather than a faithful recreation of historical events. Nevertheless, it has a degree of historical authenticity.
These are only the most visible front-runners in a world of miniatures games. I’ve not yet mentioned Warhammer Ancients, Legends of the Old West, Brutal, Anima Tactics, Helldorado, AT-43 (or its fabulous new spin-off, “Dust Tactics”), the Start Wars miniatures game (now OOP, but still worth checking out) or dozens of others.
If building, painting and playing with miniatures is your thing, then you’ve just started out on a hobby that literally has no limits.
