Who Appreciates the San Antonio Spurs?
Nearly all of the posts about the San Antonio Spurs say the same thing: they are a boring team. White it’s true the Spurs don’t run and gun, and they don’t have a high-flying dunking machine, they ARE a great team.
I enjoy watching the track team that is the Phoenix Suns (if San Antonio doesn’t win the West, I hope Phoenix does), and the Golden State Warriors have shocked everyone outside the Bay Area. They’re both exciting teams, and they’re fun to watch. But why bash the Spurs simply because they’re not as entertaining?
I have no problem with anyone who doesn’t like the Spurs’ style of play. Who doesn’t like seeing Steve Nash run the fastbreak … or Vince Carter throw-down a Jason Kidd alley-oop? I certainly do! But neither the Suns, the Nets, nor the Warriors–all entertaining teams–are as good as San Antonio.
Who appreciates the Spurs?
True die-hard fans and people who are real students of the game of basketball. People who appreciate the intricacies of a pick-n-roll and a box-and-1 and the triangle offense. People who are watching a game and, unlike most others, could actually tell you whether a team is playing zone or man defense.
People who actually see a player making a perfect back-cut to receive a pass for a wide-open layup. People who noticed the 3 screens a player ran thru before he received the ball for an open jumper.
Who appreciates the Spurs? The minority of people who truly love the game of basketball.
