Undercoating warhammer miniatures??
I have recently acquired some warhammer miniatures and intend to paint them with acrylic. Is it ok to undercoat with car spray paint undercoat or does it need to be a specific type of spray paint? The models themselves are made from lead and plastic.
Undercoating (or “priming”) warhammer miniatures is a subject of regular and passionate debate.
The short answer is that – unless you’re painting them for artisitic effect – a car body primer in black, white or grey will be absolutely fine.
The longer answer is that car body primer has a higher grain texture than the proper stuff (which comes in a range of colours and manufacturers, but which is, in all cases, formulated especially for miniature and model painting – Tamiya, Testor’s and, of course, Games Workshop, all do their own versions) and will tend to give a rougher finish to your models’ undercoat. Some people like this effect, but it can make the application of fine highlights and freehand details harder.
Either way, you’ll find the application of undercoat to the plastic models easier if you give them a good scrub in some water and washing-up liquid, rinse them off and leave them to dry overnight. This is because of the release agent used in the moulds which can adhere to the sprues and cause premature chipping or make it hard to get a smooth finish to the undercoat.
