Artist’s acrylics fine for miniature painting?
Just bought some Warhammer 40k Dark Reapers and looking to add red trim. Problem is, I’m not in the mood to go back down to my local hobby shop to put down another 4 dollars on some scab red paint. However, I do have Alizarin Crimson acrylic paint that I use for traditional painting. Will that do?
I also have a bunch of oil paints. Yes, I know they take -FOREVER- to dry, but I’m not exactly in a hurry for them to be ready for the next time I play.
Artist’s acrylics are rarely suitable. Their coverage and colour content are designed for paper and usually go onto models looking insipid or transparent.
Oil paints can be used, but you’ll need to also have some White Spirit to clean your brushes, plus they will tend to be less resistant to wear and tear than acrylics.
If you want your minis to look good, then investing in a pot of Scab Red (or, better still, some Mechrite Red foundation, followed by a highlight of Blood Red) will be much wiser than experimenting with paints not designed for the purpose. Alternatively, you may like to look at the equivalent ranges produced by Privateer Press (P3 Paints), Vallejo (Vallejo Model Color), Reaper and others that are just as good as Citadel paints (generally) and usually a little cheaper.
