Why did Bram Stoker name the vampire “Count Dracula”?
the name is derived from the “Order of the Dragon” which was founded to uphold Christianity from the Ottoman Turks. Vlad the Dracu was admitted as a member because of his bravery in fighting the Turks. From 1431 onward, Vlad II wore the emblem of the order and later, as ruler of Wallachia, his coinage bore the dragon symbol. His son Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler, fended off the Turks in various battles. He was quite cruel to his enemies, even impaling his enemies decapitated heads on pikes. Vlad III was also called “Dracula” because of his father.The name “Dracula” translates to “Son of the Dragon.”
Stoker read through Romania historical records and came across the name. He chose Dracula because he like the name better than the original one, Count Wampyr.
