What 40k army should I go for ?
I’ve been collecting orks for a while now but I would really want a second army. I definitely don’t want Space marines because they are boring and what twelve year olds choose. Also every player that blays them always use long-range weaponry like cowards and run-away if something is not going their way. I like the look of the Necrons.

Well, first of all, don’t dismiss Space Marines so lightly. The army is far from boring and, as a 34-year-old space marine player, I resent somewhat the suggestion that they are a “kids” army. Moreover, I’ve never noticed the tactics you describe being dominant against marines. You play Orks. Do you “always use long-range weaponry like cowards” against marines? Given Orks’ BS compared to their WS and A, you’d be an idiot not to close with marines just as quickly as you possibly can.
Whilst Ultramarines may sometimes be a hackneyed choice (if only because they’re so often done badly by new hobbyists*), the range of characters and heraldries in the space marine background is so enormous that there’s almost endless potential to explore. Necrons are an interesting army to play (I have a small force, myself), and painting is pretty easy (although construction is a little tricky). However, they are currently suffering from a rather elderly codex. Oddly, some players claim that this makes them too effective under 5th Edition; but others claim it makes them less effective under 5th Edition. I think the fact is that a number of rules in the codex are open to new interpretation in 5th Edition and some interpretations make Necrons tougher and others make them weaker.
If you do want to play Necrons, then it’s worth checking out the Fluid 40k rules for Necrons from the crew at http://www.dicelikethunder.com. Their forthcoming Forgestar campaign takes a completely new look at Necrons that strikes me as being a prescient interpretation of what the GW Studio is likely to do when they finally get around to updating the Necron codex for 5th Edition.
If you want an aggressive, challenging, up-to-date codex that isn’t Space Marines, then your choices are limited. Imperial Guard is an excellent codex that can field an aggressive, challenging army with either a good armoured or a good infantry bias. The Eldar codex was written under 4th Ed and has some flaws, but clearly had 5th Ed in mind and is worth checking out.
Of course, we also have the imminent Space Wolves codex and rumours are growing about Dark Eldar in 2010 (although my latest info is that this may have been put back to Q3 2010, rather than the hoped-for Q1.
*We were all there, once, so cut them some slack.
