What WarHammer 40K army should I chose?
I am new to Warhammer 40K and i’m wondering which army I should chose? Please give me some reasons as to why I should pick that army and what that army is good at! ( I don’t care about how hard the army is. Or how difficult it is to paint.
No haters…
It’s a popular question here on Y!A and if you were to do a search, I’m sure you’d find at least a dozen similar questions, but I’ll give you the same answer I always give:
Collecting, assembling, painting and playing with a Warhammer 40,000 army is a huge investment of time, money, effort and imagination. Picking the right army is essential, but that doesn’t necessarily mean picking the army that’s going to sweep all before you in an orgy of destruction. For a start, as a new player, it doesn’t matter what army you take to the tabletop, you won’t have a good enough grasp of the rules and knowledge of the opposing factions to win every game in any case, and you’ll probably lose a lot when you start.
So the factors you should consider are threefold: first, aesthetic: which faction do you like the look of most? Is it the knightly majesty of the space marines? The slick polish of the Eldar? The gribbly monstrousness of the Tyranids? Or perhaps it’s the anime hi-tech look of the Tau.
No doubt there will be at least two or possibly three different armies that call to you aesthetically, but note them all down and move on to the next factor: thematic. Do you feel called to defend the Imperium of Man or to tear it down? Do you love the boom-boom-boom of the big guns, or do you prefer to be up close and personal with your enemies, their blood on your claws and their entrails spilling upon the ground at your feet? Does the lure of Ancient Gods call to you, or would you rather smash aside such futile superstition in the name of the Greater Good?
Considering the theme of different armies – and you can find out all about the various factions on Games Workshop’s own website – will surely help you to weed out one or two of your shortlist.
Finally, then, you have to consider the final factor: pragmatic.
If an army is soon due a new codex (Necrons) then there’s no point starting to build the army now. There’ll be heaps of cool new models just around the corner along with loads of new background and illustrations to inspire you or, perhaps, put you off.
If an army tends to require the purchase of hordes of models (Tyranids) or dozens of vehicles (Imperial Guard) then you might want to lay off if you’ve got a limited budget. But if an army is easy to find for a knock-down price in the second-hand market (Space Marines/Orks) you might be tempted towards them instead.
And if the paint scheme you have in mind is going to be hopelessly complex and time-consuming to execute (Dark Eldar/Chaos Space Marines) then you may want to consider doing something else first while you hone your painting skills and come back to this concept again in the future.
I hope that all helps.
