Warhammer 40K painting and play questions: Please Read?
I baught assault on Black Reach and i started painting my marines red black and white but idk if thats ok i read in the book it said i could do them whatever i wanted… and im also having some trouble understanding how to play plz help… Ty
You can paint your miniatures any way you want! You can use an existing paint scheme, or come up with your own. You can even modify models by adding new pieces (just make sure you don’t make it so confusing that your opponent can’t tell what it is!).
40K can be a complicated game. If you want to learn a bit at a time, try this for a first game:
An Imperial scout force in hostile territory has run into an orc patrol. Each side wants to drive off the other. The orcs win if they kill 3 or more marines. The marines win if they kill 4 or more orcs.
Give the marine player 5 marines armed with boltguns. They form one squad.
The orc player gets 8 Orc Boyz in two groups of 4. They are armed with Shootas.
Set up the models about 24″ apart. Play for 6 turns. The marines win if at least 3 marines can move off the orc side of the board; the orcs win if the marines fail to do so.
Place a few woods and rubble pieces on the table – if you don’t have good scenery, a piece of green paper a few inches across will make a suitable woods for the moment. If you don’t have green paper, any old piece of paper will do.
Roll a die to determine who goes first. On a player’s turn, they:
1) Move their units. All the models within a unit must stay within 2″ of at least one other model in the unit. Both orcs and marines can move 6″, so to move each model, just measure out 6″ in any direction.
If you want to try to move through rubble or woods, you have to roll 2 dice before you move, and the unit may only move equal to the highest roll. So if you roll a 1 and a 4, the unit can move 4″ this turn.
2) Shoot. Each of your units can fire once. Pick a target unit and measure the range.
Marine boltguns can shoot 12″ if the unit moved, and 24″ if the unit did not move.
Orc shootas shoot 18″.
If the unit you want to shoot is too far away, you’re shots miss.
When you shoot, roll 1 die for each attack to see if it hits; if it hits, roll again to see if it wounds the target. The target might then make an armor save die roll; if it fails, the target is removed as a casualty.
Boltguns roll 2 dice at 12″ or less, and 1 die at 13-24″. Marines have a Ballistic Skill (BS) of 4, so they need to roll a 3,4,5 or 6 to hit. The boltguns have Strength 4 and Orcs have Toughness 4, so they need a 4,5 or 6 to wound. Their AP is 5, so it breaks right through the orc armor!
Orc Shootas roll 2 dice. Orcs have a BS of 2, so they need a 5 or 6 to hit. The shootas have Strength 4 and Marines have Toughness 4, so they need a 4,5 or 6 to wound. Their AP is only 6, and marines have an armor save (Sv) of 3+, so the marine armor will deflect a wound on a roll of 3,4,5 or 6.
If an orc unit is in a forest or rubble, they can take cover behind it; they get a cover save of 4,5 or 6. The cover won’t help the marines against shoota fire.
Don’t worry about Assaults or Morale for now. Just try moving and shooting to get a feel for how the game works. Consult the weapon and model stats on page 12 and 13 of the Black Reach ‘Read this first’ book, and the reference table at the back of the book.
When you feel confident about moving and shooting, try adding in the morale rules, then after that add in assaults. Take it in small pieces at a time and it will all make sense.
